Diodes
Definition:
Diodes are semiconductor devices that allow current to travel in only one direction. Different types of diodes perform a number of useful functions. These include emitting visible light (as in light-emitting diodes, or LEDs), emitting infrared energy (as in infrared diodes for remote controls), voltage regulation (as in Zener diodes), switching (as in switching diodes), or surge protection (as in suppressor diodes).
Types of Diodes:
Laser diodes:
A laser diode is a laser where the active medium is a semiconductor p-n junction similar to that found in a light-emitting diode. Laser diodes are sometimes referred to (somewhat redundantly) as injection laser diodes or by the acronyms LD or ILD.
Light emitting diodes:
A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconductor device that emits incoherent narrow-spectrum light when electrically biased in the forward direction. This effect is a form of electroluminescence. The color of the emitted light depends on the chemical composition of the semiconducting material used, and can be near-ultraviolet, visible or infrared. Nick Holonyak Jr. (born 1928) of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign developed the first practical visible-spectrum LED in 1962
Oring diodes :
Diodes that isolate a faulty power converter from the load and other power converters. Typically, these diodes are used external of a power converter.
Thermal diodes:
A thermal diode is a heat engine which converts a heat difference directly into electric power. |
