Transistors:

Transistors are miniature electronic switches. They are the building blocks of the microprocessor which is the brain of the computer. Transisitors have no moving parts and are turned on and off by electrical signals. The on/off (binary) switching of transistors facilitates the work performed by microprocessors. back to top

Types of Transistors:

Bipolar Transistors:

One of the earliest types of transistors, it consists of a layer of N-type or P-type semiconductor sandwiched between two layers of the opposite type. The current through the centre layer, the base, controls the working current.

Npn transistors:

Bipolar transistors manufactured with a thin layer of P-type semiconductor (the base) sandwiched between two layers of N-type semiconductor.

Pnp transistors:

Bipolar transistors manufactured with a thin layer of N-type semiconductor (the base) sandwiched between two layers of P-type semiconductor.

Bipolar junction transistors:

A bipolar junction transistor (BJT) is a type of transistor, an amplifying or switching device constructed of doped semiconductor. The BJT is a sandwich of differently doped sections, either NPN or PNP. The center section is called the base of the transistor. By varying the current between the base and one terminal called the emitter, one can vary the current flow between the emitter and a third terminal known as the collector, causing amplification of the signal at that terminal
